Meditation changed my life.

What Exactly is Meditation?
Meditation is a holistic exercise that involves focus, awareness, and relaxation.
The primary intention of meditation is to bring awareness to a chosen subject (your emotions, thoughts, physical sensations) or object (candle flame, paint strokes, mala beads). By bringing awareness to your chosen focus point, everyday distractions are able to become background noise and you can feel more grounded in the present moment.
The popular - and at times stereotypical - images we see of meditation in the media with someone sitting cross-legged for hours and chanting isn’t the only way meditation can be practiced. Meditation can also be a walk in nature without checking your phone, it can be dancing to your favorite music and allowing yourself to become one with the rhythm, it can be baking cookies, it can be self-massage, it can be witnessing the flame of a candle.
Meditation is the intentional practice of observing yourself and the present moment with non-attachment, meaning that you practice not getting wrapped up in any stories about what you’re witnessing or experiencing, and simply focus on being aware of what you’re witnessing or experiencing.
This awareness is how you begin to cultivate powerful changes in how you experience yourself and your life.
5 Benefits of a Daily Practice
1. Get to Know Yourself in a New Way
Meditation offers you an awareness of your thoughts and emotions that perhaps you’ve never experienced before.
So many of us go through life without ever truly being conscious of what exactly it is that we’re thinking or feeling, and as a result of this lack of awareness we simply allow whatever is surfacing within us in the moment to determine our next decision. This is how we come to regret what we said, how we reacted, and the choice that we made after we spend some time reflecting.
Meditation allows you to be present with your thoughts and emotions, and to really observe them as they are.
I first began meditating when my mental health was in a rough place. I was constantly overwhelmed by my thoughts, my negative self-talk, my insecurities, and fragile emotions. I was being swayed wherever my mind went, which led to a lot of regret around my behavior and decisions.
Meditation helped me to identify the patterns and triggers my mind was always reacting to, so that I could begin to make more conscious choices in how I responded to my life experiences. I was able to get clear about what I was really feeling and thinking, and this allowed me to know myself in a deeper + more compassionate way.
2. Being Still During Times of Discomfort
There are many things in life that make us uncomfortable.
Starting a new job, meeting new people, trying something for the first time, saying how we truly feel, and choosing a different path are just a few examples of the life experiences that can make us feel outside of our element. When these transitional moments arise in our lives, it can be easy to become overwhelmed by the discomfort and perhaps even try to return to a state of comfort by self-sabotaging or reverting back to what we no longer truly want.
Meditation helps you practice pausing and being still in uncomfortable moments.
By bringing awareness to your emotions and connecting with your breath (which tends to change when we’re uncomfortable), you can learn how to experience sensations of discomfort while remaining rooted in what you truly feel and desire for the outcome.
3. Connect with Your Authentic Self
How easily influenced are you by the opinions of others?
I used to be so influenced by other people’s thoughts, standards, and values. If what I truly wanted or thought was different from what others around me thought, I would feel shame or guilt around wanting to do what was best for me. This resulted in so many missed opportunities, self-sabotaging behaviors, and feeling disconnected from myself.
Meditation helped me know myself in a new way, which then helped me to connect with my authentic self.
My true feelings, thoughts, and desires for every aspect of my life began to become clear, and I no longer felt validated from being praised for doing what others wanted me to do. I began to feel validated by listening to what I was truly feeling, and then making decisions from that authenticity.
By taking intentional time to meditate each day, you’re strengthening your ability to listen to your authentic voice and make the decisions that are truly best for you - not anyone else.
4. Release Tension in the Body
Take a few moments to relax your body.
Relax your shoulders, release your belly, relax the jaw - and take a deep breath in through the nose and out of the mouth. Repeat this breath a few times.
How do you feel now in comparison to how you felt before this mini exercise?
Many of us are holding tension in our bodies as we navigate our day. We’re clenching our teeth, raising our shoulders, sucking in our bellies, scrunching our eyebrows. All of these behaviors tend to be tell-tale signs of stress in the body which tend to go unnoticed, and therefore unchanged, unless we bring awareness to them.
Meditation helps you get present in your body so you can become aware of where you tend to hold stress, and begin to practice releasing that tension when you notice it. Releasing this tension helps communicate to your body - specifically your nervous system - that it’s safe for it to relax and let go.
5. Improved Quality of Relationships
So, we’ve gone over how meditation can help you get to know yourself in a new way which can then lead to greater connection with your authentic self. A continuation of this chain of transformation is improvement in your personal and professional relationships.
Meditation helps you feel a greater sense of presence in the current moment, be more aware of your thoughts and emotions, and therefore make more intentional decisions. This means that your interactions in your relationships are more mindful, conscious, and authentic.
As meditation also helps you be still during times of discomfort, uncomfortable situations in your partnerships can become easier to navigate because you have a greater ability to be fully present in them rather than allowing your emotions or thoughts to sway your responses.
This new level of awareness that daily meditation offers means that your communication, presence, and emotional intelligence in relationships can reach new heights.
